SACRAMENTO – Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) today was nominated by Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) as the next Chair of the Senate Committee on Human Services.
The jurisdiction of the Human Services Committee includes child welfare services, foster care, adoption assistance, child care, nutrition programs, CalWORKs, Food Stamps, developmental disability services, Adult Protective Services, In-home Supportive Services and community care licensing.
“I am honored to Chair the Human Services Committee,” said Yee. “As Chair, I will be able to help ensure that our children, seniors, and the most vulnerable Californians are protected.”
Yee, a child psychologist, has long fought to protect social services in California. As the author of dozens of laws dealing with such issues, he has been named Legislator of the Year by the American Psychological Association, California Association of School Psychologists, California School Nutrition Association, California Psychiatric Association, California Mental Health Directors Association, California Partnership to End Domestic Violence, San Francisco Women's Political Committee, and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, among others.
Yee’s chairmanship will be formally considered for adoption by the Senate Rules Committee when it meets the week of January 7, 2013.
