A potential employer asks for your Facebook user name and password. That's currently a completely legal and growing practice among California companies. But now, state lawmakers are weighing the Social Media Privacy Act, which would bar employers from asking potential hires for their usernames and passwords on social media sites.

The battle is on over whether the University of California should keep its autonomy under the state's governmental structure.

San Francisco-area state senator Leland Yee has a bill that would strip UC of that power to govern itself and give it to the legislature. Currently, the state budget provides a yearly allocation to UC, but its governance is through its own Board of Regents.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California's carpool lanes would welcome a wider variety of low-emission vehicles under a bill heading to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk.

The state Senate voted 28-3 Wednesday to allow the latest generation of low-emission, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles to use high-occupancy vehicle lanes during commuting hours.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCBS) Life in the carpool lane is going to last an extra six months for thousands of Bay Area hybrid drivers.

If you drive a Prius or a hybrid Honda with yellow carpool stickers, you get to use the HOV lanes, even when you're driving solo.

85,000 California commuters do it. But that program is nearing the end, says State Senator Leland Yee of San Francisco.
