Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, is calling for the resignation of the chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, protesting a board vote last week that is expected to force the closure of the Bay Meadows Racecourse, which is in Yee's Bay Area peninsula district.

But Yee has gone one step further than merely calling for Chairman Richard Shapiro's resignation.

Taking that old saw a step further, we can also safely say that ironic twists of political fate sometimes produce unintended but nevertheless welcome results.

Such is the case involving 70-year-old Gerry Ann Schabarum, who died earlier this month from a staphylococcus infection that, because Schabarum also suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, was able to take hold in her body and finally kill her.

SACRAMENTO - An infection contracted from a pedicure may have caused the death of Gerry Ann Schabarum, wife of former state Assemblyman and longtime Los Angeles County Supervisor Pete Schabarum.

According to the Pasadena Weekly, Schabarum had been battling a staphylococcus infection for more than a year and because she suffered from rheumatoid arthritis it was able to take hold in her body.

Measure may reach floor of state Senate by late April

BROADMOOR VILLAGE - The last single-purpose special district in California with its own police force inched closer Wednesday to getting full powers for its officers.

The state Senate Local Government Committee approved a bill on a 5-0 vote that would fully recognize the Broadmoor Police Protection District. Currently the agency is limited by legal wording from performing certain duties typical of local law enforcement.

Introduced into the state senate last month, Senate Bill 190 would require the California State University Board of Trustees and the University Of California Board Of Regents to hold public sessions when deliberating and voting on executive compensation.
