Senator Ashby Praises Governor For Declaring Emergency Across California
SACRAMENTO, CA Today, Senator Angelique V. Ashby (D-Sacramento) thanks Governor Newsom for his response to the ongoing winter storm.
“I’d like to thank Governor Newsom for moving quickly and declaring a State of Emergency throughout the State of California, including Sacramento County,” said Senator Ashby. “With his fast response, the county will be able to access resources supporting storm recovery and provide emergency relief to residents. My office will continue to monitor the storm, and coordinate with local officials. I’d also like to thank everyone involved in addressing the impacts of the severe weather.”
After surviving a wild winter storm, Northern California is facing a second round of severe winter weather. Sacramento County has seen unprecedented flooding causing overflow of the storm drain system, as well as dangerous winds which have damaged trees, homes and roads. Tens of thousands of residents across Sacramento County lost power, and many have been without power for five days. Over the next few days, Sacramento County will be in a flood watch, with record high water levels expected. The Cosumnes River outside of Sacramento has already seen three levee breaches.
Senator Ashby requested Governor Newsom declare a State of Emergency in Sacramento County so that local jurisdictions and municipalities can move forward with a strong emergency response plan, have access to state resources and assistance, and react quickly to provide recovery resources for residents impacted by the storm.

Senator Angelique V. Ashby represents Elk Grove, Elverta, Rio Linda and Sacramento. She is the first woman elected to represent Sacramento in the State Senate in more than 20 years. She was elected to the Sacramento City Council in 2010. She was the sole woman for more than half of her 12 year tenure and the only member in city history to serve as Vice Mayor or Mayor pro Tem for 8 years. She is a graduate of McGeorge School of Law, and earned her baccalaureate at the University of California at Davis.
